The Humanities Research Center extends its mission to foster scholarly community and innovative humanities research to undergraduates. The Center provides humanities research and collaboration opportunities at the undergraduate level through faculty and graduate student mentoring programs; courses for the development of advanced research skills; and programs and events that enable students to have sustained and focused interactions with external scholars and institutions. All of these establish a cross-disciplinary and interscholastic intellectual community for Rice undergraduates. The Center is well positioned to cultivate a robust exchange of ideas, development of broad research skills and interests, and cross-disciplinary research collaborations for students in ways that supplement and expand on the disciplinary development carried out through programs of majors and individual departments.
The Humanities Research Center has developed a program that awards internships to top undergraduate students in the humanities to work on innovative research projects during the summer term.
The Humanities Research Center awards fellowships to outstanding undergraduate students with strong research interests within the humanities. Fellows work on cutting-edge research projects with faculty in humanities and social sciences and attend a series of lectures with invited guest speakers.
This year offers a unique opportunity for humanities undergraduates. Aimed specifically towards undergraduate humanities majors, these Masterclasses meet three times each semester to explore critical questions and debates by focusing intensively on specific texts or objects. At the end of the year, the students present their own work in an undergraduate symposium. A notable component of this program is the assignment of graduate student mentors to each course participant to help nourish a larger community of undergraduate scholars interested in advanced research in the humanities.
