New at the HRC

April 22, 2008. Congratulations to HRC's Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Recipients for 2008-10. We welcome the new fellows Diana Bullen Presciutti (Ph.D. in History of Art, University of Michigan), Adrian Weimer (Ph.D. in the Study of Religioin, Harvard University) and Matthew Wilkins (Ph.D. in Literature, Duke University).

April 15, 2008, Congratulations to the HRC's new External Faculty Fellows. Avery Kolers from the Philosophy Department of University of Louisville, Carol Harrison from the History Department of the University of South Carolina, and David Gordon from the History Department of Bowdoin College will be in residence at Rice for one semester during the 2008-09 school year.

April 3, 2008, HRC's Africa Studies Workshop to Contribute to Houston International Festival
This series of presentations and discussions by Houston area scholars considers the theme "Out of Africa" as a series of three journeys. Events take place April 24, 25, 28. Download the poster.

March 3, 2008, "History Legend or Myth?" Medieval Studies Workshop examines the legend of Thomas Aquinas
A lecture, "The Image of Thomas Aquinas in Dominican Painting," will be given by M. Michèle Mulchahey '79, the Leonard E. Boyle Chair of Manuscript Studies at the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies, Toronto. Her lecture will focus on the points where the history of Aquinas intersects with the legend or myth of him.

February 12, 2008, HRC is pleased to announce its new research fellows for 2008-09.
Marcia Citron in Musicology, Leo Costello in Art History, and Julie Fette in French Studies have each been awarded an Individual Research Fellowship. Marcia Brennan in Art History is the new Collaborative Research Fellow.

January 22, 2008, Public Lecture Series to Discuss Katrina's Impact on Houston
The HRC will host a public lecture series February 25 to March 1 about the impact of the storm on our city. Two and a half years later, more than 100,000 New Orleanians remain in Houston; some intend to return to Louisana, and others have adopted Houston as their new home. By combining perspectives from the evacuee community, the academy and municipal government, "Houston and Katrina" will paint a multifaceted and still-emerging portrait of Houston.

January 9, 2008, External Faculty Fellow Hans Poser at the HRC
The HRC welcomes External Faculty Fellow Hans Poser, Visiting Professor from Technischen Universität in Berlin. In conjunction with his visit, the HRC and Department of Philosophy are hosting the First Annual Conference of the Leibniz Society of North America, January 25-27, 2008.
